.....
This put Piper up to sixth place behind Soler-Roig, but the Ferrari
was going well now and Piper moved up to fifth position and remained
on the same lap as the leaders.
As the field spread out, all interest was on the three leaders— Redman,
Elford and Attwood. The two Lolas were going great guns and Elford was
well sandwiched in, some three seconds covering them for lap after lap.
Sports car racing at its best!
With but 14 laps to run Attwood began to have trouble selecting first
gear, and he had a spin at the hairpin which allowed Stommelen to get
near. Soon after Stommelen was through to third position but Attwood
hung on very well, and finished a close fourth. Right up to the end
Elford kept on Redman's tail and if the Lola had slipped up at all he
would have been through. Redman didn't make any mistake, and he crossed
the line a very worthy and popular winner.
